How to Use DAT RateView Data to Quote with Confidence

DAT RateView is one of the most widely used sources of truckload rate data in the US. It aggregates real transaction data from brokers and shippers to show market rates by lane and equipment type. Used well, it makes your quotes faster and more defensible. Used badly, it gives a false sense of precision.

Read the range, not just the average

An average rate is a starting point, but the range around it tells you more:

  • Narrow range: the market agrees on price. Quote close to the average.
  • Wide range: rates vary a lot, often because of volatility, low volume, or very different facilities on the same lane. Look deeper before quoting.

Check the time window

Rate data covers a period of time. For spot quotes, use the most recent window available, because spot rates move quickly. For contract pricing, look at longer periods and seasonal patterns. More in spot vs. contract freight rates.

Match the geography to the request

Lane rates can be shown at different geographic levels, from specific market areas to broader regions. Make sure the origin and destination match the actual pick-up and delivery locations as closely as possible. A broad regional average can hide big differences between cities.

Know whether the rate includes fuel

Be clear whether the figure you're using includes fuel or is linehaul only, and quote accordingly. Mixing the two is a common source of underpricing. See fuel surcharges explained.

Combine market data with your own history

Market data shows what the market paid. Your own data shows what your customers accepted and what your carriers charged. The best quotes combine both:

  • If you consistently win at the market average on a lane, you may have room to price slightly higher.
  • If you consistently lose at the average, look at your speed, your service, or the specific facilities involved.

Read using your own lane history to price smarter.

Apply your margin rules consistently

The market rate approximates your carrier cost. Your quote adds your margin according to written rules, the same for every rep. See freight broker margins.

Save time on the lookup itself

Looking up every lane manually, then copying the number into a spreadsheet and an email, is where much of the quoting time goes. Quote automation tools can use your own DAT subscription to look up the lane automatically while drafting the reply. Hopelight Quote is designed to work with the broker's own RateView subscription, so the market rate, your history and your margin rules come together in one draft.

A quick checklist

  • Correct equipment type
  • Origin and destination at the closest geographic level
  • Recent time window for spot quotes
  • Fuel included or not, and quoted the same way
  • Range checked, not just the average
  • Your own lane history compared
  • Margin rule applied

Following this checklist on every quote makes your pricing faster, more consistent and easier to explain when a shipper pushes back.
