How the calculator prices a load

It quotes the higher of two prices: your carrier cost divided by (1 − target margin), and your carrier cost plus your minimum margin. Accessorials and fuel are added to the cost first, and the result is rounded up. This is the same rule many brokerages use, and the one Hopelight Quote applies to every quote request automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a freight rate per mile?

Divide the all-in rate by the loaded miles. A $2,160 load over 780 miles is about $2.77 per mile.

How much margin should a freight broker make?

Many truckload brokers target roughly 10% to 20% gross margin on spot freight, with a minimum dollar amount per load so short, cheap loads still cover the work.

Should I quote with a minimum margin or a percentage?

Both. A percentage scales with the load, and a minimum dollar margin protects you on short or low-value loads. Quote the higher of the two.
