Why Truckload Rates Jumped in 2026, and How Brokers Should Quote Now

After a long freight recession, 2026 is the year the truckload market turned. Spot rates hit an all-time record of about $3.83 per mile in early June, above the pandemic-era peak, with tender rejections around 17.5% (MarketScale). Rates eased over the summer, to about $3.20 per mile in mid-August, but were still roughly 38% higher than a year earlier (CCJ).

For brokers, a rising market changes everything about quoting: the rate you saw this morning may not hold this afternoon.

What tightened capacity

English-language proficiency enforcement. Since 2025, drivers who fail English-proficiency checks at the roadside can be placed out of service. Trade press has reported tens of thousands of out-of-service orders; CCJ cited about 29,000 (CCJ). In August 2026, FMCSA proposed codifying English proficiency as an out-of-service criterion (FMCSA).

The non-domiciled CDL rule. A final rule restricting commercial driver's licenses for non-domiciled drivers took effect on March 16, 2026. Its impact phases in through renewals and state actions rather than overnight.

Carrier attrition. Years of low rates left many small carriers with thin cash reserves, and some exited.

Demand shifts. Tariff-driven frontloading, seasonal produce and fuel costs added pressure at different points in the year.

Forecasts differ on how long this lasts. Some providers expect elevated rates through the end of 2026, while others urge caution (Transport Topics).

How to quote in a rising market

Shorten quote validity

A quote valid for a week in a falling market is a gift to your shipper. In a rising market it is a risk to you. Many brokers now give spot quotes a validity of a few hours for same-week freight.

Use the freshest data you have

Use today's market rate from your rate tool, and compare it with your own recent covers on the lane. Your lane history tells you what you actually paid, which matters more than any average. See how to use DAT RateView for reading the ranges.

Set floors that hold

A percentage margin alone can leave you exposed when carrier costs jump between quote and cover. Combine a minimum dollar margin with a target percentage (see how to set and protect your margin).

Re-check contract freight

Contract rates set in a soft market may now be well below spot. Track your tender acceptance and talk to shippers early about adjustments (see spot vs contract rates).

Answer faster

In a tight market, shippers are not looking for the cheapest rate. They want a credible rate from someone who can cover the load. The broker who replies first with a realistic number usually wins (see why quote response time decides who wins the load).

Frequently asked questions

Why are truckload rates so high in 2026?

Mostly because capacity tightened: enforcement of English-proficiency requirements and the non-domiciled CDL rule removed drivers, carriers exited after years of low rates, and demand shifts added pressure.

What was the record spot rate in 2026?

Truckload spot rates reached about $3.83 per mile in early June 2026, according to industry reports, above the pandemic-era peak.

How long should a spot quote be valid in a rising market?

There is no single rule, but many brokers now limit same-week spot quotes to a few hours and state the validity clearly in the reply.
